The Japan Rail Pass became much more expensive on 1 October 2023. For a single day trip from Osaka or Kyoto to Hiroshima it rarely pays off on its own; it starts to make sense when Hiroshima is one stop on a longer rail journey. What it covers on the way to Miyajima:

Train or boatWith the Japan Rail PassGood to know
Nozomi and Mizuho ShinkansenOnly with an extra ticketSince 1 October 2023 the "Nozomi Mizuho Ticket" is sold at JR ticket offices; its price depends on the distance
Sakura and Hikari ShinkansenCoveredSakura trains start at Shin-Osaka, so from Kyoto you usually change there
JR Sanyo Line to MiyajimaguchiCoveredAbout 25 minutes from Hiroshima Station
JR Miyajima FerryCoveredThe 100 yen visitor tax is not; buy it at the pier machine
Hiroden tram, Matsudai ferry, direct boatsNot coveredPay the fare separately

Japan Rail Pass rules as published by japan-guide.com, checked 11 October 2026. The pass counts calendar days, not 24-hour periods.

The Nozomi question

The fastest trains between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima run as Nozomi and Mizuho services. Until October 2023 the pass did not cover them at all; since then pass holders can ride them after buying a "Nozomi Mizuho Ticket" at a JR ticket office, priced by distance. Sakura and Hikari trains on the same line are covered without the extra ticket. On a day trip, that usually means picking a Sakura or Hikari train in both directions, or paying the supplement twice.

From Kyoto with the pass

Sakura trains begin at Shin-Osaka. From Kyoto you either take a covered train to Shin-Osaka and change, or ride a Nozomi through with the extra ticket. Allow for the change when you plan your arrival at a tour meeting point in Hiroshima.

Buying the nationwide pass

The Japan Rail Pass is sold for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days, in standard class or in the Green class. Booked in advance, it arrives as an exchange voucher by courier. In Japan you swap the voucher for the pass at a major JR station or an international airport, within three months of its issue date, and show your passport. Only visitors entering Japan on temporary visitor status can use it. The current price shows on the booking page; compare it with two return tickets between Osaka or Kyoto and Hiroshima if this is the only long trip on your itinerary.

A regional pass instead

JR West sells a Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass for five consecutive days. It covers the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima and the JR Miyajima Ferry, along with JR lines in the Kansai region, and is sold only to visitors entering Japan on a temporary visitor status with a foreign passport. For a trip that combines Osaka or Kyoto with Hiroshima over several days, it is the pass to compare against single tickets.

Calendar days, not 24 hours

The Japan Rail Pass runs on calendar days from midnight to midnight. A day trip at the very start or end of its validity uses a full day of the pass, even if the train leaves in the evening.

Without a pass

The Shinkansen ticket is the largest single cost of the day, which is why tours with the train included cost a multiple of the tours that start at Hiroshima Station. You can buy a return ticket yourself and join a tour from Hiroshima Station, or book a package where the operator handles the train. H.I.S. sells the package as an option on its Hiroshima tour, JTB runs it from Osaka and from Kyoto, and Amigo Tours sends the tickets the evening before for you to ride on your own. The pages for Osaka and Kyoto compare them in detail.

On the island

The pass takes you to Miyajimaguchi and across on the JR ferry. The 100 yen visitor tax is separate: pass holders buy it at a machine at the pier before boarding. Details are on the ferry and visitor tax page.

Tours with the Shinkansen ticket included

If you have no pass, these tours put the train on the same booking. Most-reviewed first; read the price note, because on some tours the from-price is the start in Hiroshima without the train.

FAQ

Is the JR Pass worth it for a Hiroshima day trip?

Rarely for that trip alone, since the pass price rose sharply on 1 October 2023. It pays off when Hiroshima is part of a longer journey by train.

Can I take the Nozomi to Hiroshima with a JR Pass?

Yes, since 1 October 2023, after buying a Nozomi Mizuho Ticket at a JR ticket office. Sakura and Hikari trains are covered without it.

Does the JR Pass cover the ferry to Miyajima?

The JR Miyajima Ferry, yes. The visitor tax of 100 yen is paid separately at the pier.

How do I get the Japan Rail Pass?

Book it before you travel and you receive an exchange voucher by courier. In Japan you swap it for the pass at a major JR station or airport within three months, with your passport.

Is there a regional pass for Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima?

JR West sells the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass for five consecutive days, covering the Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima and the JR Miyajima Ferry. Compare it with single tickets for your route.

Which tours include the Shinkansen ticket?

The H.I.S. tour in its Osaka or Kyoto package option, the JTB tours from Osaka and Kyoto, and the Amigo Tours trips, where you ride on your own.
