Guide, driver or both
Private does not mean the same thing on every listing. Japan Guide Agency and Voyagers send a guide who travels with you, and Japan Guide Agency states that its guides hold the national licence Japan awards to guide interpreters after a state examination. Travel Club Japan sends a driver instead: the van takes you from your hotel in Osaka, Kyoto or Hiroshima and back, about three and a half hours each way from the Kansai cities, and lunch is a bento from a convenience store. Pinpoint Traveler runs small groups or private days that start at the Peace Memorial Park and finish at Hiroshima Station, guided in English or Spanish.
Who pays the fares and entries
Private listings are less consistent than the coach tours about what the price covers. This is what each product page says.
| Operator | Fares covered | Entries covered | On you |
|---|
| Voyagers | Local trains, tram and ferry | Museum, shrine and Senjokaku | Misen ropeway |
| Pinpoint Traveler | Tram and ferry | Entry fees | Lunch |
| Japan Guide Agency | Listed as included | Listed as included, with the visitor tax | Lunch, in the sample itinerary |
| Travel Club Japan | The van for up to six | Not stated | Shinkansen (none is used) |

Planning around the tide and the museum
The advantage of a private guide is the order of the day. A coach tour reaches Miyajima at its usual hour; a private guide can put the island first when low water lets you walk to the torii, or later when it stands in the sea. The same freedom applies to the Peace Memorial Museum, which is at its fullest around midday and keeps its first and last hour of the day for visitors with a web ticket. Mention both wishes when you book. The levels at which the torii floats or can be reached on foot are on the tide times page.

The Misen ropeway is usually extra
Voyagers lists the Misen ropeway as not included, and the other private listings do not mention it. If you want the summit of Mount Misen in the same day, plan for the ropeway ticket on top and for the last ride down at 16:30. The Miyajima half-day page has the ropeway hours and closures, and a guided island day from Hiroshima Station with the ropeway tickets included.
When a private van makes sense
For four to six people travelling together from Osaka or Kyoto, one price for the whole vehicle can be easier to compare with several Shinkansen packages than with one. Expect around seven hours of driving over the day and no guide at the sites. For a guided day with the train included, see the packages from Osaka and Kyoto.
